在這場戰爭之後，不僅清廷的腐敗無能完全暴露，國際地位一落千丈，招致了其後國際列強的加深侵略；一八九五年的馬關條約也使得台灣割讓給日本，造成了直到一九四五年的五十年之久之統治；日本則因此搭上列強末班車，成為亞洲唯一晉身國際列強的一個國家，並從台灣掠奪了諸多資源和利益。
